Introduction
The Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) gathered in Apulia, Italy to reaffirm their enduring
unity and determination to meet global challenges at a crucial historical moment, as the
international community confronts a series of geopolitical upheavals. They reiterated their
shared belief in democratic principles and free societies, universal human rights, social
progress, and respect for multilateralism and the rule of law. They committed to providing
opportunities and pursuing shared prosperity, seeking to strengthen international rules and
norms for the benefit of all.
Their work is grounded in their commitment to respect the UN Charter, safeguard
international peace and security, and uphold the free and open rules-based international order.
They pledged to support more effective, inclusive, and equitable global governance that
reflects the changing world, reaffirming their commitment to uphold human dignity and the
the rule of law globally.
Key Outcomes
Together with others, they addressed the pressing challenges of the time. They:
Stood in solidarity to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and its reconstruction,
pledging approximately USD 50 billion leveraging the extraordinary revenues of
immobilized Russian sovereign assets. They sent an unmistakable signal to President
Putin by stepping up collective efforts to disarm and defund Russia’s military
industrial complex.
United in supporting a comprehensive deal for Gaza that would lead to an immediate
ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and a credible pathway towards peace, leading to
a two-state solution. They called for a significant and sustained increase in
humanitarian assistance.
Engaged with African countries in a spirit of equitable and strategic partnership,
advancing efforts to invest in sustainable infrastructure through the G-7 launched
Partnership for Global Investment and Infrastructure (PGII), and launching the
Energy for Growth in Africa initiative with several African partners.
Acted to enable countries to invest in their future and achieve the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), recognizing that reducing poverty and tackling global
challenges go hand in hand. They aimed to achieve better, bigger, and more effective
Multilateral Development Banks, enabling the World Bank to boost its lending by
USD 70 billion over the next ten years, and called for international action to address
debt burdens.
Reinforced global food security and enhanced climate resilience, including by
launching the Apulia Food Systems Initiative.
Reaffirmed their commitment to gender equality, planning to unlock at least USD 20
billion over three years in investments to boost women’s empowerment with
International Financial Institutions.
Took concrete steps to address the triple crisis of climate change, pollution, and
biodiversity loss, including by submitting ambitious 1.5°C aligned Nationally
Determined Contributions. They spearheaded global efforts to preserve forests and
oceans and to end plastic pollution.
Affirmed their collective commitment and enhanced cooperation to address migration,
tackling challenges and seizing opportunities it presents, in partnership with countries
of origin and transit. They focused on the root causes of irregular migration, efforts to
enhance border management and curb transnational organized crime, and safe and
regular pathways for migration, launching the G7 Coalition to prevent and counter the
smuggling of migrants.
Deepened their cooperation to harness the benefits and manage the risks of Artificial
Intelligence (AI), is planning to launch an action plan on the use of AI in the world of
work and develop a brand to support the implementation of the International Code of
Conduct for Organizations Developing Advanced AI Systems.
Fostered strong and inclusive global economic growth, maintained financial stability,
and invested in their economies to promote jobs and accelerate digital and clean
energy transitions. They remained committed to strengthening the rules-based
multilateral trading system and implementing a more stable and fairer international
tax system fit for the 21st century.
Acted together to promote economic resilience, confront non-market policies and
practices that undermine the level playing field and their economic security, and
strengthened coordination to address global overcapacity challenges.
The 2024 G-7 Summit substantively, brought together the world’s most advanced
economies to address a multitude of pressing global issues. A significant highlight
was the renewed focus on climate change, with leaders committing to ambitious goals
for reducing carbon emissions. This commitment reflects an acknowledgement of the
urgent need to transition to sustainable energy sources and curb global warming. The
summit underscored the importance of international cooperation, especially in
funding green technologies and supporting developing nations in their environmental
initiatives.
Economic recovery post-pandemic was another critical agenda at the
summit. The G-7 leaders discussed strategies to bolster global supply chains, address
inflation, and support equitable vaccine distribution. The emphasis on economic
resilience and inclusivity highlighted the collective understanding that recovery must
be holistic, benefiting all segments of society. The summit also saw debates on digital
transformation and the regulation of technology giants, recognizing the need for a
balanced approach that fosters innovation while protecting consumer rights and data
privacy.
Geopolitical dynamics played a crucial role in the discussions, with a particular focus
on the war in Ukraine and its global ramifications. The G-7 leaders reiterated their
support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a unified stance against aggression and
the importance of sustaining sanctions on Russia. This solidarity aims to send a strong
message about the consequences of undermining international law and sovereignty.
Additionally, the summit addressed the challenges posed by China’s rising influence,
with a call for a coordinated approach to ensure a rules-based international order.
Overall, the G-7 Summit in Italy highlighted the interconnectedness of global
challenges and the necessity for collective action. While there were clear agreements
on several fronts, the summit also exposed underlying frictions, reflecting the diverse
interests and priorities of member nations. Moving forward, the effectiveness of the
summit's resolutions will hinge on the commitment of these nations to translate
dialogue into tangible actions, ensuring that global progress is inclusive and
sustainable.
